Costume Carnival 09 - Part One

These were all sketches done at the Academy of Art University's Costume Carnival - an event put on by the Illustration Department. Some of these models I've gotten to draw for years now. Not a bad way to spend Halloween - considering I wasn't going to get out - working the night shift at the 2D lab these days...

Sketching Co-Workers at B&N....

Often at B&N I would sketch my co-workers. Most of the time I was on break with Brit-lee, and I must have made dozens of throw away sketches of her on small brown bags or napkins. Eventually I remembered to have my sketchbook with me on a few days. Above is a sketch of Brit-lee and guest starring Jill. Below, another sketch of Brit-lee - that girl reads, she reads a lot.

Halloween 2009....

Well the holiday gauntlet is upon us....

Zombie Mummy Girl Lives!!!

A little early for Halloween - but I had this idea of combining two "monsters" - Zombie & Mummies. Kinda similar to the "evil" cheerleader" I did earlier - in fact both came from the same sketch pad.

Still trying to figure out a "finished" look that I'm happy with. It's alright....but I wonder about getting rid of the black lines and just going with colored lines for that colored shape look - eh, I don't know.

Maybe I'll use it as a Halloween card for this year.

Crap...So When did I post last?

Ugh...it's been several crappy months....
If you're like me you walk away from Comic-Con with a ton of flyers & post-cards that you put in a bag and forget all about - until you have to clean out the closet to make room for another bag. One of the cards I "re-discovered" was for some sort of "evil" cheerleader (which is redundant - as anyone in "cheer" - has to be a sadist) - but it made for a fun sketch in front of the TV, as I continue to hack up my lung from the summer cold that JUST WON'T QUIT.

Sketch of my Romans - trying to cheer myself out of being sick. It didn't quiet work....
Cleaned up and inked - then Photoshop - of some girls from my the limbo that is my sketch book. Still not happy with the finished line quality....
Here was the finished sketch I worked from. These characters had been sitting in a sketch book for ....far too long. Seeing as I wanted something to experiment with I thought I'd give them a try. I'll try posting the sketch book pages some time in the future - hopefully not months away.
Yeah - hopelessly addicted to the "Donna Reed" show.....I keep trying to make time for myself - so I can sketch the show (via Hulu) - but something always comes up....damn.

Stretching Out the Drawing Skills

I'm often told that I need to stretch my drawing skills and I often do try various styles, but most of the time I do go towards my favored leanings (I still wouldn't say I have a style of my own yet). The funny thing is that when I do show my work to professionals - I still get a lot of confusing remarks - some will say I'm too "Disney" - others say I'm clearly "cartoony"(suggesting that I'm more Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network).

So here I thought I'd try to study as much as possible from "Kung Fu Panda". The irritating thing is trying to use 3D models as reference, I wish I could get some reference of the 2D opening sequence....that was awesome.
Bessie from "the Might B!" is pretty far away from me in terms of skills - "Sponge Bob" is even further. The one unifying crit I get all the time is my weakness in the squash and stretch department - and it seems no matter what I just can't get it.
